Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy are concrete countertops?

Concrete countertops weigh about the same as a granite top. A 1.5" thick standard concrete countertop has an approximate weight of 18.75 pounds per square foot. Almost all cabinets produced today can support this weight without extra reinforcement.

Does concrete crack?

Hairline cracks may occur but it does not affect the structural integrity of the product. People that love concrete feel this just enhances the natural character and beauty.

How do you clean decorative concrete surfaces?

For interior concrete floors we recommend a damp mop as needed. For homes, wax about once a year. In businesses with more traffic, wax as needed, about 4 times a year. For exterior floors (garages, driveways and patios) sweep and mop with warm water. Never pressure wash porches. If mildew is forming, add a capful of bleach to the bucket as well. Squeegee off excess water. Reseal as needed (you'll notice the sealer wearing). Be careful not to seal too often, as too many layers may cause your slab to become slippery.
For countertops avoid abrasive soaps or cleansers. A mild, non-abrasive, soap works well for daily cleaning. The sealer we apply should last 3-5 years and can be reapplied using a soft brush or cloth. Paste wax can be applied every 3-6 months if needed.

Can I cut on my concrete countertops? Can I put hot pans on them?

Yes and yes but…cutting on concrete will dull your knives and you can scratch the countertops. Extremely hot pans could discolor on the sealer. When producing the countertops we can place cutting boards and trivets into the design.

Will my concrete countertops stain?

They can stain but we have found a “bullet proof” sealer that makes the countertops stain resistant but still maintains the warm and natural feel of concrete. Staining will occur if the sealer has been compromised (with sharp objects and hot pans). If you clean up after spills your countertops will look great for many years.

What about colors?

Part of the beauty of concrete is the color variations you get from piece to piece. We can provide you with color samples to match your needs but please remember the mottling and irregularity of the colors only add to the distinctive look of concrete. For acid stained floors we can provide approval samples in an area that will be concealed later by HVAC systems, cabinets or furniture. Samples are the only way to gauge what the stains will look like on your concrete, because the stain adapts to the unique composition of your concrete; no two floors are ever identical.

If we decide on acid stained concrete floors, when do we let our builder know?

We prefer you contact us before the foundation is poured. We have specific instructions for your builder and concrete contractor, to help them avoid some common mistakes.
